The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies has developed and grown in the four years that I have been at ASU.  The major is the perfect fit for the working student, like myself, that needs to customize and flex a particular schedule and course load in order to be successful.  It also provides the perfect availability of interesting classes for each individual student, rather than harnessing a set course guide like many other majors.  For each individual student the major allows for combination of certain concentration areas in order to make the best and most practical combination for that student.  Interdisciplinary skills are becoming more and more desired in the work place and being able to be part of a revolutionary major at Arizona State is a warranted experience.

BIS 401 Experience:

Walking into my first day of my applied studies placement at College Affair magazine was interesting to say the least.  I have had three years of marketing management experience at my job as a marketing manager for Anheuser-Busch, so I thought that I would be well prepared for the coming experience.  I was wrong!  I had to adjust my skill sets and professional attitudes to fit the new work environment, more specifically the people.  I had to adjust from the extremely corporate world of large meetings, conference calls, video conferencing and large excel documents filled with numbers that I still have trouble understanding to be able to fir into a smaller, more independent office feel.  I did this by understanding the dynamic of the three friends that run the magazine and adapting to politics that make the day to day operations run as smoothly as they do.  Overall I have been able to take my required internship experience, apply what I have learned at the magazine and used these smaller more intimate experiences to become a better manager and a more efficient leader.

Mass Communication:

My first concentration area is Mass Communication.  Since my time at ASU I have been fortunate to have taken a broad range of classes and participated in a number of case studies and mock PR campaigns in my Mass Communication classes that have and will continue to help me in all my future endeavors.  Mass Communication is the study of communication as it pertains to the masses, such courses like War and The Mass Media, International Mass Communication, and Journalism are just a few of the classes that students in this concentration can take.  All of which pertain to how we can individually apply Mass Communication to our future professional lives and how the history of Mass Communication has shaped where we are as a society today.

Theater:

Theater was my second concentration area and as it turns out my “passion project” for my college career.  I have always wanted to learn the art of screen writing and film production, and theater was the perfect fit with Mass Communication to have a full body of work to apply all skills necessary to integrate both concentration area.  During my time in the theater department I was able to take classes pertaining to film production, both pre and post, master Final Cut and iMovie, delve into the history of film and theater, all while mastering the art of proper screen writing.  Having such a broad background has led me to feel confident and well-rounded in all aspects of film history and applied studies.
